The Hardest Order

You can take a hill under fire. The order you cannot follow is the one that says stop, put it down, rest now.

You can take a hill under fire. You have proof, or proof of something close to it: a whole life of doing the hard thing on command, of moving toward what every sane person moves away from.

The order you cannot follow is the quiet one. Stop. Put it down. Rest now. You have never once obeyed it cleanly.

Resting feels like dereliction. Stopping feels like the moment the bad thing gets in. So you stay at your post in a war that ended years ago, guarding a perimeter no one is attacking, and you call your exhaustion discipline.

Surrender is the order you were never trained to take. Not surrender to an enemy. Surrender of the watch. The deliberate, frightening act of trusting that you can close your eyes and the world will still be there in the morning, and the people will still be safe, and you do not have to hold all of it alone anymore.

It is the hardest order you will ever follow. Take it anyway. It is the one that finally brings you home.
